Why Coombe?

Coombe is an upmarket residential district in the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames bordered by the A3 to the east, the River Thames to the west, Richmond Park to the north and Kingston town centre to the south.

It takes its name from cwm, the Welsh for wooded valley, which suggests it once covered a larger area of land than today. In the 18th century, Coombe was home to Jerry Abershaw – The Coombe Wood Highwayman – who was based at the Bald Face Stag pub and sheltered in the woods. Slightly more recent residents include Dwight D Eisenhower, who lived at Telegraph Cottage when Supreme Allied Commander during World War Two.
